Planning & Zoning Commission

The Planning & Zoning Commission consists of 9 members, including the City Mayor and an Alderman, chosen by a majority vote of the Board of Alderman.  The remaining 7 members are Bolivar citizens who are appointed by the City Mayor and approved by a majority vote of the Board of Alderman.  Each citizen member serves a term of 4 years.

The functions of the Planning & Zoning Commission as outlined the Bolivar Code and the State of Missouri Revised Statutes include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Makes and adopts a city plan showing the Commission’s recommendations for the physical development and uses of land
  • Prepares a zoning map for regulation of land use and structures built within the city
  • Approves preliminary and final plats, zoning changes, boundary changes, and lot splits
  • Establishes, enforces, amends and supplements the city’s zoning districts

The decisions of the Planning & Zoning Commission are made effective through public hearings, which give interested citizens the opportunity to be made aware of such changes and give opinions.  The time and place of public hearings are published at least 15 days prior to the hearing date.

Planning & Zoning Commission meeting dates and deadlines:

The Planning & Zoning Commission meets at 6:00 pm on the 2nd Thursday of every month.  All meetings are held in Council Chambers at Bolivar City Hall.
