The Board of Adjustment consists of 5 members, who are citizens of the City of Bolivar, appointed by the City Mayor and approved by a majority vote of the Board of Alderman. Each member of the Board of Adjustment serves a term of 5 years.
The functions of the Board of Adjustment as outlined the Bolivar Code and the State of Missouri Revised Statutes include, but are not limited to the following:
- Hears and decides appeals of error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by the Zoning Administrator
- Authorizes variances from the specific terms of the land use regulations
- Grants exceptions to the provisions of the land use regulations by issuing special use permits
The decisions of the Board of Adjustment are made effective through public hearings, which give interested citizens the opportunity to be made aware of such changes and give opinions. The time and place of public hearings are published at least 20 days prior to the hearing date.

Board of Adjustment meeting dates and deadlines:
The Board of Adjustments meets on an as-needed basis at the call of the Chairman and at other times as the Board may determine. A public hearing will be published at least 20 days prior to the Board of Adjustments meeting. All meetings are held in Council Chambers Bolivar City Hall.
